Bethesda is a games developer that has a history of creating a buzz around their titles, but this time the company has excelled itself. Ahead of the release of Fallout 4 (November 2015), the software developer has announced some shocking news around a piece of pre-release hype.
The Pip Boy is a device carried by players in the game. It is essentially a personal assistant worn on the arm (although other versions were apparently handheld) and it allows players to access information that help them make key decisions in their game play. It has become a crucial part of the game and as such an icon in the gaming world. The Pip Boy character is only a small part of the experience but somehow has a monumentous impact.
Prior to the release of the new title, Bethesda stated that it would be releasing collector’s editions of Pip Boy, which in reality is an app that can be run with your phone, interacts in-game with your Fall Out 4 and is a replica of the in-game pip boy model.
Demand was huge, and Bethesda apparently kept contacting the factory where the special edition was made to try and acquire more but the manufacturer was not complying. That’s it they are done there are no more pip boy editions left.
The only way you will be able to acquire one now is if you purchase an overpriced one through eBay.
What the special edition contains
If you were lucky enough to make an order for the special edition before it got pulled, you will receive the following on the release of the game:
- A Pip Boy replica, stand and case. The foam cuff is adjustable and the unit is designed to accommodate most smartphones (but will not work with the IPhone 6 Plus). It is this aspect of the special edition that had so many fans excited, due to the fact that you can replicate the in-game experience through a second screen. The app, meanwhile, allows you to manage your in-game perks and other aspects, making for a fuller player experience.
- A Pip-Boy pocket guide. This is an authentic guide, supplied by Vault-Tec
- A Perk Poster. Using this, players can keep track of their perks and monitor their progress.
- Power Armour packaging. This metal case is exclusive to the edition.
Bethesda’s Marketing VP, Pete Hines, has this to say on the matter:
“We reached a point where we’d go back to the factories and they were like, ‘guys, this is it, sorry. This is as long as we can run the lines and as many of them as we can make. They’re being made today, it’s not like they’re done and sitting in a warehouse. [The factories would tell us,] this is what the yields say. I mean, we don’t make [the Pip-Boy Editions], and we’d go back to [the factories] and say, ‘Demand for this is insane, we’ve got to make more.’ And they’d move other projects off or shift stuff to other factories and it just came to [them telling Bethesda], ‘Final answer: sorry, this is as many as we can make.’ And we sold every single one of those that we could.“
(Pete Hines, talking to Gamespot)
There has been some speculation that Bethesda deliberately tried to make the edition ‘rare’ to pump up demand, but Hines has stated that this is not the case, and that the company has ordered more of this edition than any other in the game’s history.
So there you have it guys, what are your thoughts on the whole limited edition topic.
